I grew up in Louisiana, where lagniappe (pronounced lan-yap) is part of the vocabulary. After spending some time consulting with laboratories and diagnostics organizations in other parts of the country, I’ve realized that lagniappe may be a word that is unfamiliar (and sometimes difficult to pronounce) outside of Louisiana, but the idea behind it is universal.
Lagniappe simply means “a little something extra”—an unexpected bonus or added value that is given beyond what is expected, which I have always appreciated because that is how I approach my work.
After more than 20 years working across transfusion medicine, quality systems, operations, diagnostics, and commercial strategy, I have learned that success rarely comes from simply meeting minimum requirements. The greatest improvements often come from extra insight, thoughtful planning, or practical solutions that help laboratories and diagnostic companies move from compliant to exceptional.
That’s the philosophy behind Lagniappe Laboratory Consulting, and the inspiration for a new series of articles: Laboratory Lagniappe.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing practical insights on topics including:
- Laboratory quality and regulatory readiness
- Leadership and operational excellence
- Sales enablement for scientific and diagnostic organizations
- Marketing in highly technical spaces
- Lessons learned from the laboratory, industry, and consulting
My goal is simple: provide one practical takeaway in every post. Something you can use whether you work in a hospital laboratory, blood bank, reference laboratory, diagnostics company, or commercial organization supporting laboratory professionals.
Because sometimes the most valuable thing isn’t another checklist.
It’s a little something extra. Lagniappe.
